Having an Audience is the Resume of the Future

Dear Friend & Subscriber,

Applying to jobs has turned into a black hole.

We spend hours crafting a resume. Spell checking, grammar checking, and making it look nice. But when we apply for jobs the majority of companies don't even take the time to let us know we've been rejected.

The resume is dying a slow death.

Having a solid resume is no longer enough to stand out. There are hundreds of resumes in the system just like yours. Companies have all the leverage when choosing applicants.

Right now, we live in a unique time where building an audience will give us a competitive advantage.

Personal branding is usually discussed in relation to Content Creators leaving the corporate world.

But investing in a personal brand with the intention of staying in the corporate world has the potential to be even more powerful.

  • Credibility: A resume is meant to showcase experience. Having an audience demonstrates we actually have experience. Building an audience in a specific field is social proof that you know what you're talking about. No piece of a paper will be able to beat that.

  • Leverage: Traditional marketing involves companies hiring celebrities to showcase their product to a large audience. Modern marketing involves companies building their own audience or hiring Creators that already have one. Having your own audience gives you negotiating leverage.

  • Access: The worst part about applying to jobs is knowing that most of your applications won't even receive a response. Having an audience gives you access to an entire network that may be able to refer you to jobs that haven't been posted publicly.

Investing in a personal brand is like investing in an asset. It takes time to build, but the benefits pay for itself.

Best,
