Back to the office

Today was my first back to the office since the end of May in 2023. Not my office - I was brought into a tech company’s office as a guest and enjoyed their wifi, view, and food for the day. I hadn’t experienced this type of environment in a while, and it was a nice “coming home” moment.

I knew exactly what I wanted to work on this afternoon, and taking away the decision of *where* in the city to work on it made it a bit easier to stay focused. So did taking away of the decision of what to eat for lunch, where to get coffee, and what to eat for dinner. Built in socializing helped too. In a way, I could see how this type of all-inclusive office environment could be conducive to the focus required for great work.

Yet I also found myself distracted by the amenities, and wondering if I would be able to stay as focused on the bottom line for what I'm working on if my built environment was a given like that. Perhaps it's best for teams who are focused on one big thing which can only be done through the combined resources of a major company. Where I'm at right now with multiple projects and potential venture directions to go in, there is something motivating about being in the real world with all its constraints but also opportunities.

With thanks to: Julia for hosting me at the office
