I was going to get productive about blogging. My plan was to draft the next 4 blogposts in one sitting, then I would flash them out in a different sitting but my broccoli told me that, that, was not a good idea.

I don’t think the point of blogging is productivity, I think the point of blogging is building this relationship we have post by post. It’s me telling you what I think right now. And if that means anything to you maybe you’ll leave me a comment or send me a note. (I don’t even know if this thing has comments)

The best way to consume this blog is… I’m going to write a prescription for you. The best way to consume this is via email. Just drop your email below and you’ll start getting them. That way you can always write back if something strikes a chord.

And you don’t have to read everyone either. If the title grabs you, go ahead and have a peek, maybe read the first sentence. You can stop there, or keep going. You can stop anywhere, it’s not about being productive :)

See you tomorrow!

Adam Ming

Ps: The illustration is a detail for something I did for an illustrating children’s book course.

One of the good outcomes of my Startup experience, was that I read a whole number of books that I would probably never have otherwise read. In the book ‘Scrum’ I learned the idea of a ‘Backlog’. At first glance a backlog looks like a todo list, it’s all the things you need to do prioritised in a single sequence. What makes the backlog so powerful is that as priorities change we move the items on the backlog around.

And priorities change.

In a more traditional work environment this might be seems as bad planning to start with. But in startup culture we’re forced to make plans with the best of our limited knowledge.

What makes the backlog work is not just having this list that we reprioritise. But it’s that we’re always doing the most important thing. So you always know what’s most important and you’re always dong the most important thing.

I’ll give you an example of how this might apply in my art practice. I created a backlog of things to fill up my 20 available Art Studio hours for the week. And right after I made my list, I got an email from my agent for a couple of promo pieces that will need working on.

So instead of doing the trying to squeeze that into my week, I simply shift around the things in my backlog, and get to work on the top priority. Things climb up the ladder, and things slide down the snake. And we’re always working with focused energy on the most important thing. All in turn.

Two out of every 10 books I own is a comic or a picture book. The other 10 are what I call instructional books. Books about how to write, or how to draw, how to sell, how to manage time and so on. Two of my favourites are; “How to pray” and “How to read a book”.

I read these books to be better at things. But at some point each new book on the subject brings diminishing returns. The last book I read, “Art Inc.” Offered a very clear overview and just enough of the nuts and bolts to help artist thrive in their career. But as complete as the book was, there was little I could learn that I do not already know.

The right instructions can go a long way in multiplying the results of practice. But nothing can take the place of practice. And by practice here I mean both training as well as the constant execution of a craft.

So instead of reading another book about how to thrive as an artist, I will choose to make art. And instead of reading an article about writing a blog post. I’ll write a blog post.

Hi everyone. I’ve recently started a daily livestream. Each is short; 15 minutes each and there is a bit of a recipe to it.

I start by sharing a gem.

What is a gem?

A gem is a hard won piece of knowledge normally a result of overcoming some obstacle in life. These gems come in the form of quotes from people I have read about, often it’s something I have tested and found to be true in my own life.

After sharing the gem I dive right in and do an icon illustration. I have a hundred things I want to draw, and I draw one of them everyday. As I’m drawing, I think out loud, and that’s always interesting even to myself.

Now today’s podcast got cut short because of bad internet. So I decided to do it as a blogpost instead!

I’ll start by giving you the gem.

Jerry Seinfeld said in an interview with Tim Ferris that the brain is a simple. Like a puppy. If you give it a treat, it will do anything. It will really work for it!

Now Jerry is famously known for writing a joke everyday. In fact he says the most important part of what he does is writing.

This would thing about the brain being a puppy came up when Tim asked him how he would teach his daughter to write.

And what he said was set a timer, say 90 minutes. And sit down and write for 90 minutes and when the time is up you can stop. Stopping is the treat.

This is how timeboxing works, you set a time to do something, and you just do that until the time is up.

Illustration: Owen Davey www.owendavey.com

There are 2 ways to meet your heros.

The first is at the journey’s end. At the peak of any endeavour or journey you get to meet the few others who have reached that point. A world leader gets to meet other world leaders. An elite athlete will get to meet other elite athletes. This kind of meeting does nothing to help the adventuresome journeyman.

The second way to meet your hero, is on behest of the hero’s initiative. The hero decides to visit with the adventuresome journeyman. To share their knowledge of the paths ahead, and some words of advice.

This is the kind of meeting I had with my hero. Every month, Owen and some others host portfolio chats particularly for the purpose to encourage diversity in the illustration industry. Every month I’ve tried to snap up an opportunity to get onto one of these one on one chats. And today, I finally did.

I prepped for it, and I took notes.

I’m writing this to help me remember the conversation and to help my fellow journeymen. This is my interpretation from memory and quickly scribbled notes, so if there are any errors they are on my part not Owens.

English Football

It is now one day to the EURO football finals as I write this, arguably the second most prestigious international football tournaments. England face Italy on home soil. Tradition, home advantage, a Wembley stadium filled with fans, a strong number 9 leading the English team and Gareth Southgate a manager who famously missed a penalty in this very tournament in 1996 has his a shot of redemption. Drama. They face a skilful Italian side in their prime lead by an Experienced manager in Roberto Manchini.

Because Owen is English, I had to spend a few precious minutes to ask Owen. Which country had the better team, and which country had the better manager. Owen laughs at this surprising opening question but digs right into it pointing out the difficulties Southgate has had over the years, including death threats, for his missed penalty. Owen points out at the end of the day, it’s just a game. “I really feel for the guy, and now seeing him able to bounce back, and get where he is, that’s really admirable”. “With that said, I think we’re going to lose on Sunday”.

I share this part of our conversation with you fellow journeyman or woman to point out that Owen is both a passionate yet practical. I believe is this combination of traits that has made him so successful and influential in the field over the last decade.

As we talk I look around his Brighton studio, that opens up into a lawn, bathed in golden summer sunlight. And I think to myself, pandemic or no, here is someone who is getting on with it.

Personal Work

Next Question: I quote a 2013 interview where Owen mentioned that he has a ‘catalog of self initiated work’, which he mostly tries to incorporate into his client work. My next question was, what do you know that other illustrators don’t know.

The answer to those questions kind of go together.

“ I don’t know anything that others don’t”, I just see the world a particular way, but everyone does. Everyone can look at the same ‘pear’ but you’ll get a hundred different interpretations of the same pear.”

“It’s really about knowing what you like to draw, what interests you, and trying to bring that into the client work.”

“For example; I really like drawing flowers now, and if I get an assignment to illustrate a article about moving house. I will try to focus on the part about moving the plants.”

This idea to put more of yourself and you particular curiosity would later come up again in our conversation when we talk about some of the books Owen has Authored.

Awards

I don’t think I can count the number of awards Owen has won with two hands. So I had to ask him if awards were important.

“No.” Was his initial response, followed by, “I suppose they help with exposure”.

He mentioned the 3x3 and the World Illustration Awards as the more ‘important’ ones to him. But goes on to point out that these are really subjective.

His answers here hinted at the important thing I would learn next.

How to get work?

I asked this question to Owen before in a DM to which he said. Are you in contact with a lot of people who hire illustrators? I would start there. I asked him to elaborate.

If you were starting out now, how would you approach it?

“Do a lot of promotion.”

“I don’t really need to promote my work as much anymore.”

“But for the first 5-7 years” I did a lot of promotion.

Was this before you had an agent?
“No, I was doing it and my agent was doing it for me.”

“Assume nobody knows your work, tell them who you are, put low resolution images into the body of your email so they can see your amazing work” (I’m going to follow up with Owen for specific sizes) And say I would like to work with you.”

Owen would reach out to at least one person every day maybe two.

“You have to be strategic about it, don’t just draw whatever you feel like” (Adam: Something my agent also told me)

“Look at the articles that are being published with illustrations. If for example you see a lot of articles about migration, do an illustration about migration. Do full spreads and spot illustration for the same article”

“You need to be able to show them that you can draw a cucumber and make it interesting in your style”.

“Draw an infographic of a cucumber”

“Draw maps, maps are always in demand because…. You can’t find a photograph of a map”

“I believe illustrators should diversify; you can make a good living in publication, and you can make a good living doing editorial, but if you can do both, then you can make a really good living.”

On writing non fiction

Because I’m looking to illustrate and author my own nonfiction books, I asked owen about his process.

“It’s basically the same as researching any project.”

“Make sure you cover the basics, then follow your particular curiosity wherever it takes you, and check your facts”

“Wikipedia is a good place to start because it will lead you to all sorts of interesting places. Then use a more credible source to check your facts”.

At about this point we came up on time. He took a look at some of my work and pointed out a couple that he found to stand out. I’d like to thank Owen again for his time I find the information about the road ahead so useful.

To sum up what I learned over our 30 minute conversation I would say to succeed in this business you might want to assume this decidedly English traits of being passionate and practical.

I’ll end with a quote by Owen that I found on the internet,

“I don’t love being a human paintbrush, but sometimes that’s where the best money is”

Thanks for reading!

In March 2020, I started drawing comics again. The Quarantine was in full swing, I was living on savings and I had a single regular illustration gig which tied me over.

There I was, the world stopped, and I still was getting paid to draw. I was essentially, accidentally a full time illustrator.

I wondered if I could build a career out of this.

So like all instagram comic artist my mind went first to Patreon. But I have enough working experience to ‘begin with the end in mind’. So I looked for some of the most successful comics I could find, some had hundreds of thousands of followers, and I went to see how much they earned from patreon, and how hard they worked for it.

I found that maybe 3 comic artist on paetron made anywhere near a decent income. You can actually find a list of what the top paetrons earn. But I saw other artist with meager followings getting paid to do regular strips in magazines and newspapers, or collect weekly comics into books. These guys were also hired regularly to illustrate editorials and covers. These were the professionals.

I studied the professionals.

I wrote 30 interview questions that I would like to learn from the professionals. And I studied 2 of them, one at a time. I asked the questions in google.

Through interviews, videos and FAQ’s I learned everything about these artist. How they started, where they worked, what their daily routine was, what events they attended, how they found work, where they got their ideas.

If you can formulate a question, chances are you can find the answers.

I decided then to follow the path of the professionals, rather than the amateurs (in the truest sense of the word)

Now I asked myself a question, what do the professionals have that I don’t.

The answers:
1. A portfolio
2. The ability to walk into a publication company in New York or London, basically access to Art Directors.

As I was journaling these questions and answers, Google was packaging all my search queries to parse into facebook, who passed it to instagram, who served me an ad that said:

“Make art that sells!

I found this on instagram. It was dated 26 January 2019. I drew the black lines over these watercolor blotches that was printed in Lorna Scoobie’s book ‘365 days of drawing’.

The caption read Day 16. So I must have started working on this book on the 10th of January.

The book acted as training wheels, or more accurately a crutch, to help me limp back into drawing. I was coming out of some grueling years working at a startup co-founder.

This was the door I walked into tentatively, shyly. Maybe you never forget how to ride a bike, but it took awhile for it to become joyful again.

It was just a little less painful than NOT making art. And at that time, it was enough.

——————————————————————-
Start a drawing habit.
Start as small as you need to.
If you don’t know where to start, start with this book.
The keyword is habit. I’m now represented by Lydia Silver at the Darley Anderson Illustration Agency. It is a milestone as I aim to develop an illustration career. I am thrilled to be working with Lydia because we share a vision of what that career could look like. And that shared vision helps create a greater level focus in the work.

In the past decade I have co-founded and advised for start-ups. And with every fund raise would receive tons of Congratulations. And so when my peers would raise funds I would Congratulate them too. There was this one guy, who when offered congratulations, said; “NO. Don’t congratulate me, wish me luck!”

I think this rings through with this milestone in my illustration career. It marks a new phase. It’s the start of a new level. It’s time to play.

I remember a comment Jerry Seinfeld made in Comedians in cars getting coffee.
“I pity the people who win things like ‘American Idol’, they feel like they are ‘in’. You’re not in, you had a good night, that’s all”. Now go do that for 10 years… And maybe we’ll let you in.”

Now that was a joke, but I feel it points at what the truth is like. When I posted this on instagram my Dad left a comment. “Praise God, for prayers answered, 🙌❤️🙏 have fun and remember every part of the journey.”

I’ll do all of the above. But most relevant to us is I’ll be doing the, “remembering every party of the Journey” bit on this Blog/Newsletter. We’ll not every part… Just the parts leading up to this milestone. Let’s go back 2 years….

If you like this thing share it with a friend. Or subscribe to get more of it if you’re the friend.

Hello world. I’m starting out illustrating children’s books. But one day I hope to be writing them as well.

I love how images and words interact, taking turns to do the work. Like in this piece, since we write the word mouse, just a drawing of two eyes let’s you know that you are looking at a careful mouse. And the picture of Vinny tells you so much about his character, like how he devises plans sometimes, at other times he rushes in.

That information gets to you bypassing the need for language. It’s writing with pictures which is really what illustration is.

This is a redrawing of a piece I did before. I did it in black and white this time, to practice my black and white chops. In the second piece the sitting posture is informed by my own kid who’s just learning to sit.

In the past I used to be very literal about drawing everything in a scene, from perspective to every little object. Now I see it a bit more like forming a sentence.

We choose the icons to represent what we are trying g to convey instead of words . We arrange them in a way that is interactive, like a moment waiting to happen. By putting some space around it we’ve created something like a sentence. We can always add words, but when adding words to a picture story, you are using them in a very specific way.

It’s the language of comics, that heartful under appreciated medium that generates so much of our culture!

Hey World, it’s Adam! I’m trying to become a fulltime illustrator at 40. I write about the journey.

I have some creative downtime. It’s 4 hours to my bedtime so I don’t want to take a nap. But time is so precious to an independent creative. So I got started thinking how can I use this downtime, or low energy time.

Here’s a 7 things I thought off:

1. Update the portfolio.
2. Clean up files and folders
3. Take some photos of sketchbook pages for a future posts.
4. Look for potential clients to contact.
5. Send something to potential clients.
6. Tidy up the studio
7. Write a blogpost

If you’re ever wondering how to move your creative career forward when you have low energy make a list like this or feel free to borrow mine.

I ended up spending the time creating a profile on hireillo.com , an illustrator friend of mine always has work, and this is one of the places that drives a lot of her clients to her.

It takes a day for them to give you a login, and another day before they vet your portfolio. There is a weekly fee to be on the site and you need a paypal account to sign up.

The way I see it, If it get you work the fee is worth it, and if it doesn’t, you unsubscribe.

Write back!

What do you do with downtime?

And if you’ve tried hireillo.com , how did that go?

If you like this thing forward it to a friend! If a friend sent this to you and you liked it, please subscribe!

If you’re looking to inject more ‘feels’ into your illustration. Maybe this will help you.

I’ve been sending my work out to illustrator agents to get representation. One agent in particular offered curt feedback to the effect of; “I don’t feel it”. And I though to myself, that is really good feedback. Of all the jobs an illustration must do, one of them is to give you the feels. That’s why I chose ‘Middle-Earth’ as the theme for my A-Z Series. In addition to working out my style this gives me a chance to work out my ‘feels’. Yes ‘feels’ is a technical illustration term.

How to get the feels.

1. Study the creative expressions of the theme by have gone before you and tweak for taste.

Some of my favourite visual interpretations of Middle Earth were by Tove Jansson of Moommin fame, Micheal Hague, Mikhail Belomlinsky and Tolkien himself. These classic interpretations were full of the wit and humour that was found in the writing and served as a great jumping off point. I then tweaked it by incorporating more modern color palettes and composition trick that I’ve learned from reading comics which are designed to lead the eye around the page.

2. Have a clear image of the audience that the work is aimed at.

“The Hobbit” illustrated by Micheal Hague, was my introduction to the rich world of middle earth. As a young dyslexic kid the illustrations were all the motivation I needed to spend hours reading the book. I wanted to make work aimed at that version of me. And when my baby girl is about able to read at this level, I wanted illustrations which could make her want to read the text. If ya’ll like it too; that’s a bonus.

3. Get slightly outside your comfort zone.

At this point I’m pretty confident I can cleanly nail a brief. But nailing a brief doe not produce the feels. Instead I need to aim slightly outside my range of competency. When done correctly, this brings in a sense of adventure and uncertainty, and ultimately joy when things go well. I get out my comfort zone by trying new tools and techniques and leaning in even more on the techniques that I am currently using. E.g the cutout look that I’m using to design some of my edges.

4. Curate your choices

We can’t choose what we’re interested in. But we can transform anything we are working on by injecting into it choice elements of things that we’re interested in. Put as much of ‘you’ into the work. Favourite color, favourite brush at the very least listen to your favourite music while you work. The better you are at articulating your interests, the wider the toolkit you’ll have to be able to inject interest into the thing you’re working on. I transformed this A-Z project by choosing a subject matter that I loved and many others love to.

I continue to work on this project and share it on Instagram.

A drawing is not an illustration.

The difference is intent. An illustration implies that there is a message that needs to be transferred using only visuals. The illustrator is paid for his ability to deliver that message crisply and cleanly.

The way an illustrator delivers a message is called style. To work out a style an illustrator needs to be able to talk about it at least to herself, she needs an aim. Then she needs to adjust her work to be closer to the ideal.

If you practice wrong you’re only training yourself to be better at the wrong thing.

In the picture I’m making my own notes and criticism after I’ve completed a couple of pieces.

I don’t know how long I’ll live.

I’m not dying or anything.

I’m just saying that I have an unknown quantity of life to spend.

How can I act today, so that at the end, I can know that I have spent that one precious life on the things that I wanted to?

When we are young, the future seems like an infinite number of “One Days”. And we get used to this idea that there will be this one day in the future to do each of the very important things we want to do.

Alas, we have a limited and unknown number ‘One Days’.

This is a distinct feature of life.

There is the proverbial story of someone who spends his whole life storing up riches for himself and in the end not being able to spend it. Or the woman who neglects her relationships and regret it later on in life. These are things to be avoided. How?

Here are the strategies I’ve seen people employ:

1. Hope and Pray (regardless of an actual believe or hope in a God of any kind)
In this method, you just pick a thing, normally the most urgent and hope and pray that, ONE DAY, perhaps when there are no longer urgent things to do, you can catch up on the important things.

2. Live Forever. In this method, you expend a portion of your resources trying to prolong your life, ideally forever. Nutrition and exercise are the most common tools in this strategy. Although much more extreme methods have been used, such as replacing old blood with the blood of a younger person or attempts to upload consciousness to a computer.

3. Live vicariously. Make a list you wish you did, and find some younger person to act it out. How you do it is you convert your unfulfilled ambitions into advice and dispense it to a younger person or people. These can be your own children. Or you could become a teacher and pass it on to other peoples children. If you have accumulated wealth, another option is to invest into companies and you can act through those.

4. YOLO. Recognising that You Only Live Once, you can do the things that seem desirable now without much thought of the consequences. It’s almost the opposite of the Hope and Pray strategy.

Here is my strategy. I call it;

Days Spent = Life Spent.

Here’s how I see it. While I cannot predict when my life will end, I do know that today will end at midnight. And chances are I’ll be alive that whole time, maybe I’ll even be awake the whole time. So if I can somehow live out my ideal life in one day, in the measure that can be distributed in a day. And if I can do that every day. When you add up all the ideal days, you’ll get something that looks like an ideal life.

This means, that each day I try to do the amount and kinds of activity in proportion to how I envision an ideal life to look like. I divide up my day in exactly the same way as one might wish to divide up their life. In fact I see these two ideas as the same thing.

Which strategy do you employ? Or do you have an alternative? (Email me your thoughts?)

One of the things that I’d like to do daily is share thoughts like this I’ll post them here. I also draw in my sketchbook everyday and work on some illustrations. I curate my best drawings and writings into a newsletter every week. You can sign up to receive them if you like.
