On Greatness

None is perfect, that is our bane. To strive for greatness, rise from the ashes, flying to the sun, and even getting too close to it, does not  matter, we sidelined the tale of Icarus, Daedalus' son, with his wings made of beeswax, who flew too close to the sun, and paid with his life, leaving his father to mourn him, and damn his skills for the remaining of his life.

We are borne into a world that imposes shackles on our necks, thralling us to it's whims. We are told by culture, religion, friends, parents, ourselves and the internet that to seek greatness is our ultimate whim on earth. We strive for immortality, always living in the future, taking lessons from the past while ignoring the present.

Every day, we see the worlds around us, not through the lens of appreciation, but of comparison. The first thing we do unconsciously is to compare ourselves against them, and most of the times, to our Ego's dissatisfaction, fail. So does the person we are comparing ourselves to most of the times. We are who we are after all.

We sacrifice our loved ones, friends and family alike on the altar of the Greatness God, spilling not blood, but something worse, their feelings, in a futile attempt of ascension to Godlike. And this God, like the rest, is greedy and in need of more, always and every time. Every dog has it's day - Stephen King, from The Stand.

And yet, greatness is not hard to attain. A greatness that does not give you immortality, does not give you worldly riches(sometimes), and does not make you the topic of every conversation, and does not write you a Song.

While a blow to the Ego, this is the kind of greatness that i'm aspiring to attain. A greatness within a circle of humans whom i know. To give, to give always and never expecting a dime in return, no song need to be sung in my name. To be calm, trustworthy, confidant and a companion that can be relied on. This, while does not look like greatness, is the definition of greatness to me. To wake up, to work with an elite no-bullshit team, to hang around no bullshitters, that to me, is the Greatness God to worship. I don't want immortality, death can have me, but to be good(which is not that hard most of the times) is enough greatness to have.
