Growing up I was obsessed with rocks. Very obsessed. So obsessed in fact that I had many random cookie tins and small boxes filled with various rocks that I would find or buy in stores. Friends and family would even get me rocks as gifts for birthdays or surprises, and I loved it.
Being in my more adult years my obsession with rocks as declined by quite a margin, however I still find them very beautiful and intriguing. I mean just think, there are rocks on this very planet from the beginning of creation, from the “Let there be light.”
I mean wow, if rocks could talk I wonder what they would say, what stories they might share. When you think about it there are a lot of things we can learn from rocks, without them ever having to say a word! For instance just like mankind rocks come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. And just like rocks every single one is beautiful and has its own place on this earth.
Granted some rocks can look a bit rugged, sharp, and rough around the edges but let’s compare that to a geode.

A geode is a type of stone that indeed does look quite rough and plain on the outside but once you get a crack at it its inside is lined with beautiful crystals of all shapes, varieties, and colors. Don’t judge a book by its cover, and I guess don’t judge a rock by it outside.
But there is still something more to be learned from a simple stone. There are a lot of times as christians that we want something. We want to get from point A to point B with no difficulties, challenges, and definitely no wait time. We want what we want and we want it now. And if that’s not you great! I applaud your patience, truly I do, and I wish I was more like that.
If you are that person though, I get it. I understand, believe me there have been many times in my walk with the Lord where I know there is something amazing He has in store for me, and I want it that second. And when it doesn’t happen as soon or fast as I think it needs to I get upset, angry, or even discouraged. But something hit me not too long ago that I’d like to share with you.
Have you ever been on a trip or a hike where you’ve been close to a river? If so you’ve probably seen the small smooth stones at the bottom or even around the river, and maybe you’ve skipped a few of them on the waters surface. But you know the interesting thing is that the stones you’ve seen or maybe picked up and skipped weren’t always that smooth. That little, or sometimes big, rock went through a long grueling process to become so smooth. It can take hundreds if not thousands of years (possibly more) for that rock to become smooth. That small stone is moved all throughout the river hitting other stones while the water is constantly running over it.

I say all of that to prove that the process of getting from point A to point B can be hard and tiring. But if you allow God, allow the Creator of the universe, to smooth your rough edges it will be worth all the time in the universe. You’ll notice that allowing yourself to be “smoothed” if you will, allows the freedom to just let things go. To let things roll right off your back and keep on going, not holding onto to any hurts or grudges but moving on and moving forward.
I believe that the willingness to be “smoothed” can lead to such a beautiful freedom and lightness, not to say you will never have another hard day in your life. But it will definitely help you to get through it quicker, to let the hard times just roll right off of you and not allow it to get caught and stuck to you.
