There are a lot of things that we go through in life, a lot of trials and tribulations that we face throughout our years on this earth. We have hard days, good days, really good days, and really hard days. But when it’s all said and done who, or what, are we allowing our comfort to be in. Recently in my family we’ve had a loss, my husbands grandmother passed away. A beautiful women who loved and lived for her family, but loved and lived for The Creator far more.
When you lose someone in life its easy to allow yourself to fall into a never ending tunnel of sadness or sometimes even depression, but let me tell you something her husband (my husbands grandfather) has been such an incredible role model to me over the past few weeks. Is it a hard time for the family, yes, but it is also such a beautiful one too.
Grandad said something that really struck my heart and has rung through my ears ever since I heard it. He said that even though this has been a difficult and hard time for him, being without his best friend, he hasn’t lost The Best Friend his true comfort. God.
The Bible says, “for where your treasure is, there your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers] will be also.” (Matthew 6:21) When we leave this earth, whether by trumpet or time, we will take nothing from it with us. We can’t take our shiny cars, our money, friends, family, pets, or phones. None of that would do us any good anyways, because just like on this earth the only thing that matters is Creator. Did we know Him and seek Him, or did we not? Did we put our hearts, our treasure, in Him THE TREASURE. Or did we put it into things that are fleeting, things that will rot away with time.
“Blessed [gratefully praised and adored] be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts and encourages us in every trouble so that we will be able to comfort and encourage those who are in any kind of trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). This verse is so beautiful, because it shows the reflection of God our lives can have if we choose Him first. When we allow Him to be our comfort, we can reflect His comfort onto others, in the same way that we can also reflect His love onto all those around us.
In a world full of selfishness and the desire to be the one at the center of attention, there is something so pure and beautiful about relinquishing control and the need to be seen. And stepping back and allowing God to The One who is seen in our lives.
“But when you pray, go into your most private room, close the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6). And as the song says, “Oh what a friend we have in Jesus!”
