We have a blocking high affecting the weather over the UK (or at least the southern UK) at the moment. This is the weather system that I like the least, as not only do we have to put up with depressing short grey days but also the solar generation from the roof is hugely reduced. Usually at this time of year, with clear skies or broken cloud, we could expect to generate enough to fill the battery, probably the hot water tank and likely start filling the car. As the following chart shows, the amount of daily generated electricity from our solar (yellow) has tailed off in November (under the anticyclonic conditions). This results in the battery not being refilled during the day and therefore a greater reliance on imports from the grid (red). And therefore increased costs through our energy bill. Critics will no doubt say "Aha! Renewables don't work!", but we are still generating a small amount that offsets our needs - I'm just greedy in my wanting the solar to always power the home. Anyway, at some point this high will collapse and hopefully we will have a sunny winter after this!
