I don't like meetings (topic for another day). But when I complain about standups, I get push back, mostly because they're quite short (in the ideal case at least).
And yeah, it's true. Which is why they don't bother me as much as other meetings, but they've still got problems:
1. They're unnecessary.
You could just write your update down. If someone has a question, they can post it under your update, and you can reply. All async, on your own respective times.
2. They discourage documentation.
People don't care about making things clear in writing (e.g. implementation decisions, progress updates etc.) because they're gonna talk about it at standup, so it's fine.
This is a more general problem with relying on meetings instead of async comms.
3. They take way more of your time than 15mins or however long the meeting duration is.
If you have standup at 9:30, you're not gonna do a deep dive into a complex task at 9:00, because you know you'll have to stop in 30 mins. And once standup is over at 9:45 (which is the best case scenario), it will take you at least 15mins to get into it. So you don't start proper work until 10:00.
