What a Week … [#2]

Hey, World 👋

Well, folks, another week has flown by. I hope you’ve all had a good one and you’re doing well.

Here we are at the second edition of my newsletter. I’m not sure it really counts as a newsletter, what with the distinct lack of news, but we’ll go with this for now. I’m also yet to come up with a better name, so please let me know if you have any suggestions.

This week, I’ll be sharing a gaming (👾) suggestion, a short tip (💡), which will help you squeeze a little more value out of Siri and finally a new favourite YouTube channel (▶️) you may like.

💡

First up, I have a small tip to share with you which may help you get through that ‘Read Later’ backlog you’ve let grow over the years. Finding time to read can be a challenge sometimes, so why not let Siri read for you?

I shared this via Twitter a few weeks ago and I was surprised quite a few people seemed to have not seen it before, but if you go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content and toggle on Speak Screen, you now have a very convenient way for your phone to read out anything currently displayed on your page. I recorded a short demo of this in action, which you can see below:

Click Here (HEY World really needs to enable embedding …)

The fact that some of the newest Siri voices sound so realistic at the moment really helps make this a really compelling option, at least for me. Give the America Siri voice 2 or 3 a try, for example.

Next up, if you’re into gaming, I wanted to recommend my recent obsession, Hunt: Showdown by Crytek. According to Crytek, the game can be described as:

… a competitive first-person PvP bounty hunting agame with heavy PvE elements, from the makers of Crysis. Set in the darkest corners of the world, it packs the thrill of survival games into match-based format.

Essentially you, or your team, are tasked with hunting down various boss creatures in a map while other players, or computer controlled monsters, try to kill you. I’m oversimplifying this a great deal, because I don’t want to get into a full review here, if if you’re into competitive FPS games I can’t recommend this enough. A few months ago I recorded a brief gameplay video of you’re interested in seeing what it’s about, though watching someone actually good at the game may be a bit more beneficial.

I just love this creepy, foggy, Bayou aesthetic as well.

Last, but by no means least, I’m going to, once again, recommend an entire channel instead of a single video.

I’m always trying to diversify my media consumption so, in the case of YouTube, I’ve been trying to expand my subscriptions beyond just gaming and tech. I recently discovered a fantastic channel called ‘Minty Comedic Arts’. The channel has been running for years, and the videos see Minty running through some interesting facts and details about a plethora of pop culture films. Many of the details can likely be found via a short Wikipedia or IMDB search, but Minty delivers them with such charm and clear passion for his interests that it’s hard to know just get engrossed in his delivery. Highly recommended!

Well, that’s a wrap for another week. After sending the first edition out of this I also shared it to Twitter where I got a few more sign ups so thanks if you’re a newcomer to the blog / newsletter.

Have a great week and look after yourselves.

Andy
