I changed jobs 2 months ago.
For 5 years I worked for a family run company. Nice place. Good people.
Family companies offer some benefits more corporate companies don't. They tend to prioritise work/life balance. They tend to not be too formal or admin heavy. Communication is quite straightforward. Leadership is accessible.
I liked working for this firm but there was no growth. And the biggest downside to family run businesses is you're status is less that of an employee, and more that of a troubled teenager.
Pay reviews are non-existent for instance. Career stewardship isn't a thing. Training is treated suspiciously because the boss (aka Dad) doesn't really see why he should pay $1k out of his pocket for what is perceived to be your personal improvement. Improvements he might not realise, because that same course might make you more employable to someone else.
When I started my new job I was asked to organise a partner event, essentially a sponsored party with companies we work with. I invited my old employer because they have since started selling new companies products.
Lunch at a swanky restaurant. Cocktails at a nice bar, dinner and drinks at an even swankier place. Total cost: 21k Sek (about $2k).
The partners have worked with for 2 months have all been in touch. Told me they had a nice time and offered to cover some of the costs.
My former employer has said nothing. Not even Merry Christmas or thanks for dinner.
Nothing. Zero. Zilch.
Not gonna lie, I find that upsetting. Or maybe I'm just being too sensitive.
