When you were a kid at school, you would definitely experience the poking game.
There’s always that annoying classmate, sitting next to you, who keeps poking you with things like pencils to disturb and annoy you.
“Hey, stop..”, you said gently, almost whispering it out because you didn’t want to disturb other classmates in the class. Maybe it was a session when the students were writing their essays and doing their homework.
That annoying classmate poked you more. You shoveled him so slightly because being violent is not good.
One more poke. Two more pokes. One poke followed another.
You couldn’t focus at all on our work, but you didn’t want to yell at anyone because everyone else seemed so quietly focus on their work.
You grasped your courage and gave one more go, “No. I’m working. Please don’t touch me”.
The annoying student heard you and looked at you. You thought it’s finally over.
After a peaceful time that lasted only 2 minutes, you got poked by him again.
You repeated the whole cycle of your responses, and yet it didn’t work.
One more poke.
You finally had enough. You face grew red, heartbeat got faster. “STOP!”, you said.
You slammed your palm to the desk, stood up straight, and walked out of the classroom. That breeze that hit your face you would never forget.
In the classroom, other classmates shockingly looked at you and were largely confused. They thought you were sick in your mind. In fact, who suddenly slammed their hand to the desk would have a normal brain?
You acted like you have no self-control. You disturbed everyone else. Your action was selfish.
What was that annoying kid doing then? He shrugged his shoulder with a face of “not-me-I-didn’t-do-anything”.
This seems like a kid story, but it is life. A projection of the social dynamics you would experience in life. Nobody knows how much you have endured so far. They turn to you because of your abrupt actions, and there seems like never a good reason for abrupt actions. So, nobody cares what you have endured. They would only ask, “Why are you so mad? Could you please calm down? By any means, I don’t think your abrupt actions would solve the problem. Could you be more mature?”
Actually, people saying that it is an immature act don’t know what a mature act is. They thought swallowing everything is mature. So, the best advice is to play the poking game with them and see if they would act “maturely” when it is their turn.
