This was the question I asked myself in early January. Thing is, there are not too many hours of light in December and January in Texas, and summers are brutally hot, so I was in the market for an indoor exercise equipment. It was either rowing, cycling or elliptical, and rowing seemed to me the most interesting.
My sources for recommendations were:
- Members of Rands Leadership Slack that rowed in college and/or row currently.
- r/rowing community
- Dark Horse Rowing YouTube channel.
Because of the popularity it is also the rower with possibly the largest ecosystem of 3rd party apps and an SDK.
As a final precaution for a scenario "what if it does not work for me?" I checked the resale prices. This was what sealed the deal. Used "like new" Model D are currently $100-200 more than new ones, because you can get them right away (unlike the stores where they are waitlisted). I figured, if rower does not work for me, I will just sell it for the price I got it. That was not needed.
I found that I enjoy rowing. Since end of January I clocked more than 20 hours on this rower with a total distance over 230 km. I am still very slow and I need to work on my form, but the process and progress is rewarding.
Anyway, if you are thinking about getting into rowing in 2021, I absolutely recommend you consider Concept 2 as your choice of equipment.
Cheers,
Alex
