For a while now, I've thought that AI is both overhyped and under appreciated.
It's a dangerous cocktail, because it is both easy to dismiss AI and to over invest in it. Yes, we are in a bubble. AND Yes, DeepMind basically solved Protein folding with AI.
LLMs plug into this landscape almost too neatly. One aspect where I see this clearly is with Human Learning: If you rely on an LLM as a crutch, you slow your own learning down. But people have said this about all tools that make things easier. When I was in high school, people had this literal discussion about graphical calculators.
Just now, I used an LLM with great success to accelerate my own learning. I wanted an iOS shortcut that allows me to put items in OmniFocus. By asking the LLM, I was able to generate a bespoke tutorials for my specific needs. Instead of having to search for an article that almost matches my needs, the text was tailor-made for my needs.
This is super powerful!
In the end, it is not only about the tool, it is how you use it.
