Dear Martha Mercy,
Mama fell in love with naming you Martha first. I was resistant for the longest time, but eventually God settled it in my heart when I saw your ultrasound and heard your heartbeat. While we didn’t find out that you were a girl until you were born, God used that moment to give me peace in naming you Martha. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with your name, just as I’ve fallen in love with you!
Martha is a biblical name. The main passage we went to was Luke 10:38-42, where Martha is serving Jesus and Mary is listening to Him teach. We wanted to remind you to always choose the good portion—Jesus—and not to be distracted by the cares of this world no matter how well-intentioned they seem. This is a lesson God continues to teach your mom and me. As our firstborn, we know it is likely your personality will be modeled after ours, so we wanted to give you a name to remind you who and what is most important: Jesus!
John 11:1-27 is another passage behind your name. Jesus loves you, Martha, just like He did your namesake, and we’re praying God gives you the same unwavering faith in Christ!
As for Mercy, we loved the idea of choosing attributes of God for our children’s middle names. We want these to serve as guides for life and reminders of God. We chose Mercy for you.
God’s mercy is simply His goodness toward those in misery and distress. God is the Father of Mercies, His mercy is new every morning, He has mercy for every moment, and He is forever merciful! Our Heavenly Father is rich in mercy. Already, even just in your birth story, we have seen His mercy at work! Martha Mercy, praise the LORD!
Ultimately, we are praying that you come to an understanding of God’s mercy poured out on us through His Son, Jesus Christ. He says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” (Matthew 5:7).
You have my love,
Daddy
P.S. Some people recommended that we have a few names ready in case you didn’t look like the name we wanted to give you, but we didn’t do that. Once we settled on your name, it didn’t change. When you were born, and I saw that you were a girl, I declared your name immediately. It was right. No other name fit you; you’ll always be Martha Mercy.
P.P.S. Great-grandma Mary suggested that your name is a combination of both great-grandmas’ names: Mary + Thelma = Martha. That works!
