The five rules of dog ownership, according to Jameson.

Halloween was a real life nightmare for me last year. I had to say goodbye to Jameson, my thirteen year old Yellow Labrador and best friend. The sense of loss is intense and I’ve been reflecting on what Jameson thought me about dog ownership.

Rule 1. Train early and often.

Compound Interest has been described as the eighth wonder of the world. Disciplined and consistent puppy training is the ninth since it compounds similarly. Dogs, like humans, are better at learning languages when they are young. Shared fluency in the vocabulary you’ll use is the best investment you’ll make as a dog owner.

Rule 2. Create Groundhog Day.

Dogs love to rewatch the same movie and they are amazing time keepers. Dogs will be happier and better behaved if they can predict how their day will unfold. Jameson knew when he would be fed and walked every day, creating a calmer environment for both of us.

Rule 3. Invest in your dog’s diet.

If finances allow invest in higher end dog food and supplements. For labradors this includes a steady dose of joint supplements, like glucosamine. You’ll thank yourself for this down the line.

Rule 4. Get pet insurance.

Your dog will undoubtedly need TLC and you’ll sleep better knowing major veterinary emergencies are covered. I learnt this rule the hard way when two year old Jameson needed open chest surgery––thankfully the procedure went smoothly.

Rule 5. Know when to say goodbye.

Father Time is undefeated and there’ll come a time when the best thing you can do for your dog is to let them go, they’ll tell you when it’s time.

Thanks for teaching me so much Jameson and for being the best dog anyone could hope for. Miss you buddy!
