May Day - Recap

May Day, also known as International Workers' Day or Labour Day, is a globally recognized holiday celebrated on May 1st every year in many countries. The day serves as a tribute to the hardworking individuals who form the backbone of our society, and to acknowledge their achievements and contributions to society. It is a day to promote worker's rights and social justice, and to advocate for the betterment of the working class.

The origins of May Day can be traced back to the late 19th century labor movement, when workers in the United States and Europe fought for better working conditions, including an eight-hour workday. In the United States, a general strike was organized in 1886, demanding the same, culminating in a peaceful rally in Chicago's Haymarket Square. Unfortunately, the event turned violent when a bomb was thrown at police officers, killing several people. This tragic event led to the trial and execution of several labor activists, known as the Haymarket Affair.

As a result, in 1889, the International Socialist Congress declared May 1st as International Workers' Day in commemoration of the Haymarket Affair and to promote the rights of workers worldwide. The day is now celebrated in many countries around the world, often with parades, demonstrations, and other events to honor the contributions of workers to society and to advocate for their rights.

In conclusion, May Day is a day of great significance for the working class, and serves as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made to achieve better working conditions and worker's rights. As we celebrate this day, let us continue to advocate for the betterment of the working class, and promote social justice for all.
