The Upanishads often point to truth by subtraction. Instead of giving the Self another label, they ask you to notice what you are not: not the body, not the passing mood, not the stream of thoughts, not the roles you perform each day. This is the meaning of neti neti — “not this, not this.”
At first, the phrase can sound negative. But it is really a clean way of seeing. The problem is not that life is empty; the problem is that the mind keeps grabbing what is visible and saying, “This is me.” The body changes, the mind changes, even the stories we tell about ourselves change. So the Upanishadic method asks a simple question: if something comes and goes, can it be the whole of who you are?
Neti neti is not a rejection of life. It does not say the body is useless or that feelings should be suppressed. It also does not mean, “Nothing matters.” Instead, it is a careful distinction between what is temporary and what is present through every experience. A wave can be beautiful without being the ocean. Likewise, a thought can be useful without being the Self.
You can try this in a few quiet minutes. Notice an experience that feels strong — perhaps a worry, a memory, or an identity label such as “successful,” “anxious,” “spiritual,” or “behind.” Then gently ask: is this always here? Does it remain unchanged? If it shifts, then it is something you are aware of, not the awareness itself. The practice is not to fight the thought. It is to see it clearly and let it take its proper size.
This is why neti neti is so practical. It does not require a special state. It only asks for honesty. Each time you stop confusing a passing experience with your identity, there is a little more space, a little less pressure, and a little more steadiness. The Upanishads point toward a freedom that does not depend on fixing every thought. It begins when you recognize that what is changing is known, while awareness itself simply remains.
In that sense, “not this, not this” is not a refusal of the world. It is a refusal to mistake the world for your deepest Self. When the false labels fall away, what is left is not blankness. It is the quiet fact of being aware — simple, immediate, and already here.
