Coyote Gulch trip report

After a few years on the bucket list, I finally made it to Coyote Gulch within Grand Staircase-Escalante. A few takeaways:

  • Coyote Gulch is one of the most incredible places I've ever been, and it's easy to see why it's increasing in popularity. Despite all of the discussion about overcrowding, we actually didn't find it too bad.

  • One reason it didn't feel overly busy was because we hiked east once we were in the gulch, away from Jacob Hamblin Arch. We were lucky to find a campsite right at Coyote Natural Bridge!

  • This is the perfect trip for new backpackers. The hike in (we started from the Forty Mile Ridge trailhead) was pretty quick, and not too hot in the mid-April weather. With the possible exception of descent into the gulch (picture below), young kids could handle the hike no problem.

  • "Do I need a rope?" This question is common among those tackling this trip. I actually made it down without one, but the ascent out of the gulch was much easier with one. If you really really don't want to bring a rope you can wait for another group, but that could mean 30+ minutes baking in the sun.
Yes, this was actually our campsite! Unforgettable.

This alcove near Jacob Hamblin Arch was one of the most awe-inspiring landmarks of our trip. Standing inside inspired reverence, almost like standing in an ancient cathedral. (Yes you can camp here, though it was quite busy.)
Don't skip the Black Lagoon. Although it's a little out of the way, its ambiance is definitely unique.
Climbing up the infamous "rope section."
