When trying to get a deal done, one of the common mistakes I see from people is that they do not think about—or maybe even care about— how the other side has to sell it.
Whether it be a promotion, a salary increase, a job offer, an acquisition, etc.
There is always gives and takes. When you are on the side of getting something or taking something, you MUST be aware of how the other sides parties (co-workers, bosses, family, intermediaries, public perception, etc) will view it.
Everyone has to sell the details of a deal to somebody.
If you can help frame that up and consider it when working through a deal structure, you will be far closer to getting stuff done.
Something I try to do, when faced with this situation, is ask the other side some variation of “is this going to be a hard sell for you?” Or “will others view this as a good give/take for you?”
Always remember — there are two sides in a deal.
