We will all die soon, and most everyone dies sooner than they want. Health degrades, the mind slips, things fall apart.
We don't have that much time we may want to do in life: Maybe have good health, a good relationship, a family, a career. Maybe write a book, run a marathon, play guitar, learn a language.
On average, it will take 5-10 years to be great at most things. Some things take less time (learning an instrument), other things take longer (having a great relationship, raising kids), but let's say 5-10 years is a good duration to go from amateur to dang good.
Life's creative period starts at about the age of 20 when you're unleashed upon the world. It ends at about 70 when creating new things becomes much more challenging. You have a period of 50 years to make your mark on the world.
And if being great at something takes 5-10 years, then you only have time for 5-10 things in life. If you're like me and slower than average, taking closer to 10 years to get good at things, then you have time for 5 things in life.
Let's say you want a great relationship, to be healthy, and to have a good career. Now you have time for 2 more things before age catches up.
We can always quit things or trade things, but the clock keeps ticking. I recommend using 5-10 years to decide what you want for the rest of your life.
