When I want something so badly, I tend to forget the present moment. There's this feeling that once that thing is obtained, then and only then would I be happy.
If contentment can only be found in the present moment, then I'd say it's a waste of time to stay in the future or stay stuck in the past.

“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?"
…
So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
Matthew 6:25-27,31-33 NLT
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
The worries, fears, and anxieties tend to come when I take my eyes off of God. When I start to put my hope into things or achievements. That's when things become too much to handle.
Lately I've just been wanting a Light Phone 2 so badly. I say and think it's for the reason to unplug and to focus on family, and it is, but I also know my tendencies to hyper-fixate on things. And, those things eventually become idols. I want nothing to do with idols.
Jimmy Needham puts it so well, "Anything I want with all my heart is an idol… And, anything that I give all my love is an idol."
God's asking for surrender today. He's asking for my faith today. Why worry and try to control something that's not even in my control: the future. Why worry about what I'm going to eat, or drink, or the type of phone that I want?
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
It's like in Psalms 23, where David says, "The Lord is my shepherd. I have all I need." If God is the shepherd, the provider, and the one who knows my deepest needs and wants to meet those, then how can anything else compare?
Lord, I surrender to you. Guide my heart. Guide my mind. I'm sorry I have been idolizing things lately. You tell me not to worry. When my eyes are on other things, it's not on loving people. Thank you for meeting my needs today. You give me all I need to love you and serve you. Help me see opportunities to live heaven on earth today.
This theme of surrender is so powerful and prevalent. I forget how powerful it is to surrender to God every day. My buddy Dylan and I created an app called Overflow. It's an app designed to help you love God and love people from the Overflow. Check it out.
I surrender to God, because he sees me, knows me, loves me, and provides for me. He is a good Father.
