September 14 would have been David Wojnarowicz’ 70th birthday. We sat in the MoMA sculpture garden and took in his groundbreaking, fearless work. Most memorable was “Listen to this” (1992): projecting this film in MoMA’s backyard meant his booming voice echoed up and down the streets of Midtown Manhattan criticizing US society and government for the collective neglect and villainization of gay men at the height of the AIDS epidemic.
