Night of a Thousand Anoras

Homemade bolognese + Ziggy cuddles
The best David Lynch tribute of the night…two of Lynch’s most famous leading ladies as dates, Rossellini/Dorothy Vallens wore blue velvet 💙
Very proud of Zoe Saldaña, who will always be my Eva Rodríguez (from Center Stage, her film debut)
Also proud of Julian for beautiful, heart-wrenching film Sugarcane 🫶🫶🫶

While I was rooting for both Sugarcane and No Other Land, seeing No Other Land win Best Doc when it couldn’t get a US distributor, when it reveals undeniable truths that many in power would not like to be seen/acknowledged…the award felt like a triumph. But as Basel Adra, the filmmaker-subject of the film, has shared: this award means little when the occupation, violence, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians has only increased, and shows no sign of stopping.

💙 a little embarrassing to place a couple of this year’s movies with any sort of honor when his face and memory hover over the proceedings

The segment honoring Quincy Jones made me want to know more about his history, and I discovered that his one-time wife and Rashida’s mom is the one and only
NORMA from Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Someone I’ve been falling in love with the last couple of weeks as I watch Twin Peaks for the first time. By Rashida Jones’ account, the couple had a love-filled relationship and continued to be amicable and good friends following their divorce.

Funny factoid shared with me by my Brazilian friend about the director of I’m Still Here. What a rare narrative for a person with access to such wealth—to be interested and invested in art and humanity, as opposed to impoverishing the world. Walter Salles is likely a curiosity, rather than proof of a “good” billionaire. Just glad he’s not actively dismantling critical administrative state functions that protect everyday people!
Got caught in the Hulu streaming-death, so had to finish on a flipped Spanish-language Twitch livestream 🤙🏻
