Portico Darwin: Honor, Code, Loyalty

TODAY'S RAMBLINGS

This will be a short-ish blog post, because I am mostly in a state of shock having watched yesterday the highlights of the 4th hearing by the January 6 Committee.  Shock again that our country came THIS close to a successful coup.  And in a state of shock over people like "Senator" Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.

Because it appears he must have missed Colonel Nathan Jessup's speech in "A Few Good Men", about serving America.

We use words like honor, code, loyalty.  We use these words as a backbone to a life spent defending something.  You use them as a punchline.

"Hand-deliver a fake set of electors to Pence"?  Sounds like a punchline, alright - but a punchline from a uniquely American nightmare.  How much more evidence does Merrick Garland and the United States Department of Justice need before indicting Trump and his co-conspirators?

I will repeat that the awful irony here is that Trump virulently pushed a lie the election was stolen when he and his fellow treasonous seditionists were actually trying to . . . steal the election.

I specifically remember a terrible exchange I had at the time with a close friend, who insisted there was ample evidence that the Democrats had, in fact, attempted to steal the election.  I pushed back with facts, and it didn't go over too well.  This friend and I patched things up, but we no longer talk about this or any other political subject.  I would love to hear his thoughts now, if only as a barometer on the effectiveness of the 1/6 committee.

And to my friend - who I believe is an occasional reader of this blog - and anyone else still in doubt, please remember:

  •  those that are saying Trump led a concerted, deliberate effort to overthrow a US Presidential election are doing so under oath; yet,
  •  those that are saying Trump did nothing wrong will not testify under oath.

Why would that be?  The truth is never wrong and it certainly can be given under oath.

FROM THE UNWASHED MASSES
Some great stuff from the Hawaiian wannabe Hunter Deuce.  Some were a bit shocked he couldn't attend Monday's Warriors parade - wouldn't a week on Hawaii Island make one more rested, not less?   Still, he got it together enough to cherry-pick from The Bill Maher Show.

Krystal Ball schooling the shit out of Bill Maher over the stock market crash in March of 2020:

Krystal Ball / Bill Maher

Fine, but oh, her parents and their highly questionable naming decisions . . .

Up next comes the financial wisdom of Arthur, never one to panic.  He's spot-on, too.

I am once again convinced that Americans cannot do arithmetic.  Including the current drop in the markets, the S&P 500 has returned an average of over 10% per year over the past five years.  That's an above average rate of return.  The aberration was the peak in January, not the current correction. While I don't like seeing 20% of my net worth disappear, I knew at the time that 20% was illusory.  Stay the course . . .

Thank you to any one that is reading this newsletter.
