By height.
That was Ty's flippant response in Caddyshack to Judge Smails.
As someone who identifies as competitive, this line from Caddyshack has stuck with me through the years, but it's made more sense to me lately.
I grew up taking sports very seriously and tied my identity to performance and achievement. When that chapter ended (in failure), I refocused that intensity on the perceived sport of busyness without much intention. I'm still struggling with my habits and defaults, but realize that this isn't a life isn't zero sum. It's not sport.
While I'd prefer to have more unique thoughts, I feel like Ty captures an aspirational perspective for me.
How do you measure yourself against other people? By bank account? By status? Why are those any more reasonable than by height?
