Yes there are heroes walking among us.
I just had a delightful lunch with a great lady, an unsung hero in my neck of the woods.
In August 2019. We had a thing happen in my little community. I won't repeat the whole story. But it involved my neighbor mom her two kids and her ex-husband. He showed up one evening drunk and high. Was pissed off and fired his pistol several times in the air. Broke into mom's house. Kids were already out the back door and at my place. Bastard went to hospital. Mom had to spend 2 days, in jail. But let out on personal recognizance.
The bastard went back to prison for violating parole. With a hole in his leg. Everybody else was safe, and unharmed. Mom got charges dismissed.
Just the other day the bastard got released again...
So I spent the evening with mom and a nice sheriffs deputy. Who drove all the way out to tell us. Bastard is supposedly wearing an ankle tracker. And in another county. So I have been kinda busy. We are on medium alert. Mom shot him once and she'll do it again, and he knows that.
He did NOT show up.
---
I want to tell you the good news about that original incident:
One of the little miracles that happened to go along with the resent badness in my neighborhood. The Sheriff dispatch was fantastic. I wasn't on the first call, so this comes second hand. The fist call came from another neighbor, hearing the truck horn honking and the first shots fired into the air. The dispatcher called Mom inside the house. Got the situation info, then instructed the Mom to get the kids out the back door and to my house.
The dispatcher kept all phone lines open. Sheriff ETA was about 40 minutes. So the dispatcher calmly talked to all parties, getting the info needed, then calling me to make sure the kids were safe. Next, telling the Mom to stay inside and not to confront the bastard. When the bastard broke into her house, the dispatcher was there on the phone, listening and recording. This dispatcher now had multiple phone lines, the radio to the Sheriff, the fire and rescue folks, open and working.
She probably had a map open as she kept asking for our exact locations. The type of weapons we had, and what we looked like. Then when most of it was over, the bastard down, she calmly walked through the first aid as needed. She never stoped talking, calmly giving us advise. Reassuring everyone. Keeping us updated on the ETA of Sheriff.
I am going to buy her dinner if I ever meet her.
Today was that day.
