Psychonauting

Psychonauting

About the late 60's, white suburban couples, and LSD.

So me your young psychonaut drenched in many trips, on many different hallucinogens. Returned to my dad's house for the summer college break. And started attending a Unitarian Universalist meeting, just to fractured the boredom. This was filled with 30 and 40 year old white suburban couples. Middle class professionals. We would gather at someone's house, drink, smoke, and I'm sure some behind the scenes sex was taking place. It came to pass that I told some of my trip stories.

This then over a period of months became a hot topic. I had lead trips before, and was well aware of the how, and the how not to successfully bring newcomers into this world of hallucinogenic experience. And I knew a guy. So I got a hold of a large amount of very pure liquid LSD, (no this time it was not Owsley, but another guy at UCLA chem lab). We booked a large house out of town, for a long weekend, and I wrote some guidelines, and what to expect.

There were maybe 12 of us. Me and another woman would stay straight. And we paid extreme attention to set and setting. As you do. Repeatedly going over consent, and expectations. They would each be talking a good healthy dose. Our aim was not recreational.  But what at the time we called storming heaven or mind-expanding. Things began well enough. Folks were relaxed, informed, and willing. The human mind is an unpredictable and nondeterministic epiphenomenal experience, and when given a large dose of LSD, strange things happen within it.

Our first realization was that 12 was far too many at one time and place, and a sort of resonance started to manifest. Someone would exclaim about some auditory or visual hallucination, and it then rippled around the room, in a feed-forward loop. We gently asked for silence, but these people were talkers, professional talkers. And in a very unusual headspace, so they felt compelled to talk about it. Next what we then called the 'body-trip' started. The slight nausea. The out of wack proprioception, that one usually passes through with a large LSD dose. Became chaotic and bounded around from one person to another.

I knew what was happening, and quickly turned the background music up a couple of notches. This did quiet down the talking. But I also knew we were soon would be getting to the truly important part of the trip. The disassociation of self. At about 90 minutes in. Some called it the "oceanic bliss of the universe itself." (man we were so full of ourselves, in those years). This can be overwhelming the first time. And no matter how one tries to explain this feeling beforehand. Until you experience it you have absolutely no idea the shock it can have.

I had given each, a dose according to body weight, of 300ug (micrograms). This is today is considered a "high dose" but at the time, was considered average. So as to ensure that this state of ego-loss was likely to take place. And at about 120 minutes in, everyone got very quiet, and motionless. So far so good. This was the smooth part of leading a trip. Not much to do. Except keep people hydrated, and comfortable.

What I did not expect, and in hindsight should have. Is that at about 4 hours in, these folks got very horny. They were now coming slowly down from the peek. And recentering into their bodies. Clothing came off, and serious petting began. Now they were still pretty high. So at first there wasn't much actual intercourse. But they all felt like they had shared something special and survived. And of course this was probably not the first time sex had been happening between many of these couples.

By hour 5 a full blown orgy, was developing. And I, a healthy young man and easily aroused. Shyly at first, began to take part. These folks were older than me, and had more sexual experience. And I who hadn't tripped that day, had a lot more physical energy than they did. Became the focus of attention. As did the woman that also stayed straight.

So we all did all the things, then later ate a meal, and did all the other things. Some more. At some point very late that night, as we were passing out from exhaustion. It occurred to me that this was their plan from the beginning.
