The Gift
Note:
The other day a close friend of mine had a birthday. He had been feeling sort of at a loss, unsure of what he should be doing. So I gave him a gift, with these instructions.
Instructions:
Problem statement.
Life ain’t fun anymore. The muse moved out. There’s a hole where the meaning used to be. Even comedy and snark seem to be in short supply. Hours of numb disregard fill the time between reading unremarkable books. No, not despair, nor depression, or even anything diagnosable, just a vague lack of something important forgotten.
So on to what to do:
A path to a possible solution.
(and the point of this gift)
1. Practice and routine. To find relief from the above stated problem, one needs practice and routine. There are a million methods, this is just one. But one that has a high probability of success.
2. Effort and change. An action becomes a habit only when it is practiced repeatedly daily for about 21 days. And the effort, although uncomfortable at first, diminishes with practice.
3. Requirements. Setting and location. This then is the hard part. To move to a new setting, preferably outdoors. A nearby park, a trail, or other nature filled place. (not out on the deck). Daily or at lest 3 times a week. Set a schedule. Stick to it. Everyday is optimum, but I doubt doable.
4. The tools. This notebook, and pen. Your mind, and the ability to write. Yes, I know, this seems too simple and won’t amount to much. And at first this will be true. Yet persist, keep up the practice. Write something, anything, without any regard that others will read it. This is not a performance. It is a ritual.
5. Write whatever the fuck you want to write. But write something each outing. No slacking off. I don’t care if it is raining. That’s why I got you these “write in the rain” tools. There is NO wrong way to do this. Only by NOT doing it will the effort be useless.
So to sum up. Set up a routine to get out into nature, with these tools. And note down on paper, with pen, Whatever crazy things come to mind. The whole point, is the doing of the practice. Not the results.
