Prompt:
- Something important that you lost.
(I want you to go back to what we learned in early spring about beat, breath and rhythm. I want you to really focus on breathing through this one.)
~~~~
Jump. Move. Travel to a new city like it was changing your socks. Did you need a reason? Sometimes. Sometimes you had done a bad thing, fleeing. Sometimes you were looking for a noun. Sometimes you were just bored. The newness was the thing.
Privilege gave me the luxury of a union job, hired out of a union hall. New city, new hall. Walk in. Get on the extra board, and in 3 days you'd be working. New shop, new people, new jobs. No, not all great. But new.
New libraries, new museums. Dance clubs with different music. You could be anybody. You were new to everybody. Make yourself new. Tell a different story. Basically lie. Become odd, or humble, or a smart-ass. Freedom. Everything was temporary. The one-night-stands were legendary.
Running on empty? Na. you were full. The newness fed you. Filled up the holes. Kept you feeling alive. Plenty of time for new bookstores. New foods. New moods. Maybe you'd stay for a few months, or even a year. If the vibe was good. But always the new grabbed you by the imagination and you'd be off.
Yeah, there was an occasional tickle in the back of your mind, that this could not last. You wondered what being rooted in place felt like.
Yet the next airplane or bus ride quickly put an end to that.
Live light on the land, they said, ay did that for years.
