Hey Reader,
I’ll start by saying that I’m relatively new to the world of watch enthusiasts. I’ve always liked watches—especially ones that look great—but I never really dig into the details of movements, brands, etc. Sure, I knew about Rolex and maybe Patek Philippe, but that was pretty much it.
So, how did I end up with a watch from a microbrand, you ask? Well, it all started when I saw the Unimatic U1 Classic in one of Teddy Baldassarre’s videos on his incredible YouTube channel. At the time, I was wearing my Citizen Tsuyosa daily and wasn’t looking for a new watch. So surely the Unimatic U1 Classic slipped my mind for a while.
Time jump! My friends asked me to build a project for their new business. Since it was my first solo project, I decided I’d treat myself to something special once the project was completed. And so I did, I bought a Hamilton Murph 38mm. What a lovely timepiece!
A few days after the Murph arrived, I suddenly remembered the Unimatic U1 Classic. I wasn’t sure at first. Was it really a good idea to buy another new watch so soon? Sure! I decided to sell my G-Shock Glide and Zeppelin watches, add some cash, and build a three-watch collection.
And so, I did.
The moment I unboxed the Unimatic U1 Classic, I fell in love. It just felt right on my wrist. From its minimalist design to the beautiful craftsmanship, it’s a watch I truly enjoy in almost every way. (And don’t even get me started on the packaging—Unimatic knows how to make an impression.)
For over a month now, the U1 Classic has been my daily companion. Maybe it’s because I’ve been traveling, and it pairs so well with my wardrobe, or perhaps it’s just the feeling this watch gives me… Or maybe it’s me who’s projecting such a desirable state onto this watch. Whatever it is, Unimatic has absolutely nailed it with this timepiece.
But wait, you caught that “almost”, didn’t you?
Yes, there’s one thing. The accuracy isn’t great. I know, I know—I’ve got an iPhone in my back pocket, but I still want my watch to be at least a little more precise. With the Seiko NH35A movement inside, I’m getting around +30 to +60 seconds a day. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s worth mentioning.
Despite that, the Unimatic U1 Classic remains my go-to watch. I honestly can’t imagine when, or if, that will change.
