Introducing WNCLUG-Asheville Which Is Now a Drupal Site

In late September, 2022, I made the decision to develop and launch a new website for the Linux Users' Group known as the Western North Carolina Linux Users' Group (WNCLUG-Asheville) located in Asheville, NC. Prior to this, a WordPress website had existed but it was hosted by WordPress.org rather than by a commercial web hosting company, 3rd-party virtual server provider (such as Digital Ocean or Linode) or self-hosted. The new website is self-hosted. This allows for increased security availability since it is located behind a privately-owned and managed network firewall and affords greater dedicated personal website management.

I endeavored to develop the Group's new website using a superior Content Management Framework (CMF) called Drupal. Unlike the popular Content Management Systems (CMS) known as WordPress or Joomla, Drupal is built with security in mind from the ground up and is layered with a modular structure enhanced by the PHP server-side scripting language. It has the ability to apply site permissions to individual blocks placed on the site and is extremely granular when it comes to security in general. To learn more about Drupal, please visit https://www.drupal.org.

The purpose for the new WNCLUG-Asheville Drupal site is to develop a web presence for the Group on the W3 and to form an outreach to a worldwide audience, introducing everyone to the benefits of Linux versus MacOS or MS Windows operating systems. As a result, our website is designed as a multilingual website so that site visitors around the world can read, enjoy, and learn from the published content. Currently, the website is translatable in French and Spanish with English being the default language. However, there are plans in place to add more languages, such as German, traditional Chinese, and Hindi. Whether you're a Linux newbie or seasoned veteran, there will be something on the website from which you can benefit and learn.

The Western North Carolina Linux Users' Group meets online via Jitsi Meet on the first Saturday of every month at 12pm (Noon). WNCLUG-Asheville consists of a small group of Linux enthusiasts and open source promoters who meet to share their adventures in the area of Linux projects and to seek help with troubleshooting Linux hardware/software issues they may have encountered along the way. Everyone with an interest in Linux or open source is welcome to join this group. To join, send an email to: wnclug_asheville+subscribe@googlegroups.com and follow the directions received in the email response you will receive. Not only can you interact other members of the Group in a ListServ forum format, but you can enjoy videos and comment on them on our WNCLUG-Asheville YouTube channel.

I encourage you to visit the new Drupal website at your earliest convenience. Since it is a secure website, please consider creating an account on the site so that you can interact with the website to comment on blog articles that you read there as an authenticated site visitor (since non-authenticated site visitors are unable to comment). If you wish to write articles to be published on the website, you can become a contributor by becoming a registered user and then sending an email to the site owner asking to become an author for the website.
