Have you ever finished a workday feeling completely drained, despite checking everything off your to-do list? I had this experience constantly until I watched Dan Sullivan give a talk that transformed my understanding of growth and success.
Speaking at a Genius Network event, Sullivan shared a deceptively simple insight: "Energy makes you feel good, stuff makes you feel bad." In that moment, everything clicked. I realized I had been chasing growth all wrong—adding more tasks, more systems, more complexity. All that "stuff" was actually making success harder, not easier.
But Sullivan wasn't just pointing out a problem. He was offering a revolutionary solution: What if 10x growth becomes possible when we focus solely on the activities that energize us? What if the path to massive success isn't about doing more, but about doing what gives us energy?
Inspired by his talk, I did a thought experiment: What if we could identify ONE core activity in different areas of life and business - different 10x areas - that creates energy instead of consuming it? Going through my notes from his speech, I mapped out these potential energy-creating focuses:
Confidence - Get Results
Revenue - Create Value
Profits - Build Systems
Wealth - Prioritize Ownership
Free Time - Create boundaries
Health - Eat whole foods
Fitness - Increase VO2Max
Energy Level - Master sleep
Reputation - Write, speak, publish for a specific audience who overvalues what you do
Capabilities - Get more reps
Clients - Narrow your niche, focus on the top 1% of spenders
Customers - Positioning and clarity of message
Connections/Network - Fish where the fish are
Fundraising - Shift from supply-side to demand-side selling
Here's the most exciting part: growth doesn't have to feel like a constant grind. Right now, pick an area of your life or business where you feel stuck. Instead of piling on more tasks or systems, pause and ask yourself: "What single activity in this area consistently energizes me?"
That answer—that energy-creating focus—could be your key to achieving more in the next year than you have in the past five. Because as Sullivan showed me, when you align your actions with what energizes you, 10x growth isn't just possible—it's natural.
