Create > Consume

Hustle mutha fuckas.

There is a hustle in learning and in doing. Consuming vs creating. We want to spend our best hustle time creating.

When anxiety pops up, it is usually a result of consuming more than I am creating. Too much input and not enough output. Thinking too much, procrastination, exhaustion, and even depression happen when I am Mr. Consumer. I don't like me, like this. It is not who I am.

When I have a moment of clarity, I ask myself:

What's the hurry?
Where are you trying to go?
Do you remember why you are hustling?

This is part of my daily routine because I am on a learning train. I am excited about a few projects I am working on. Balancing the learning/doing is challenging for me. When learning I want to know it all, right now. Also, I want my execution to be perfect. This is why I continue to consume instead of creating.

Consuming is easy, creating is hard.

My day starts with my seven-month-old son. He wakes up smiling and ready to roll. He helps me improve my morning person vibes. It's impossible to want to sleep when he is sitting up smiling and staring at me. I pick him up and we head downstairs. I can put him in his seat while I get our morning drinks ready. Mine, coffee.  His, Similac. I am totally winning here.

Once our breakfast is ready, he lays next to me. He's old enough to reach for the bubby and hold it while he gobbles it down.

Teach your kids independence from the beginning. You will never regret it. Take it from a Father of five.

He slurps and I sip. My instinct is to grab my phone or iPad. I reach for them with the wrong intentions. I am about to consume information.

A simple truth: consuming or creating first, will dictate your day.

Landing on social media first will leave you feeling empty. We know this but gravitate to it. Once we become bored (after 5 mins) we bounce over to a news page. Headlines are NEVER good. Kicking our good mood further down the road. The news sucks, maybe the crypto/stock markets are bullish today. Wrong again, Colonel Sanders. The markets are bearish instead of our preferred bullishness. By now we have cemented how our day is going to flow.

Think about these three scenarios. How does that morning social scroll leave you feeling? Ask yourself the same about the news or investing. I am willing to bet, on most occasions, they're not setting you up for your best day.

Tip: Do not start off the day consuming. This muddies the waters. Scuba divers prefer good visibility and you should too.

I fail at this often. I love learning. When I find a good topic, I want to learn everything. Right now, yesterday if possible. I dive in, then see something else 'shiny' and follow it. This repeats until I am so far down the rabbit hole, I hit the floor. This isn't the floor I was aiming for. I was looking for a place to 'stroll' through and here I am hustling my way to the bottom.  I look up to crawl myself back to land. The only problem, is I have taken so many paths, I cannot remember which one leads me home. Enter anxiety. It is at this point I realize how counterproductive I am being.

Stop, drop, and roll. I have to put out the learning flames. I know this about myself. I need to learn a little, then act. Repeat. It's a simple rule, hard to follow.

I read often that FOCUS and COMMITMENT are true life hacks. I have to agree. Those who can do this, do life better than most. Life is hard, so don't make it harder.

A better way to start the day: Create.
Creators create.
What does that look like for you?
Do you see yourself as a creator?

Creativity requires action. I wish every time I sat down to write, I would be on point. It doesn't work like this. I have to push myself. The push isn't just sitting down to write. The push is continuing to push when the words are not coming out. They eventually do. Once the words are out, I am not finished. I need to push through the editing. Do not edit while writing. Interrupting the flow kills creativity <- another tip.

Successful creatives are creative because they create.

You have gifts, we all do. If we spend our time consuming, we bury those gifts. The world needs us. Our thoughts, words, feelings, but most of all our ACTION. Creating is action.

Don't stop consuming what inspires you. Put a governor on your throttle. Keep it at a strolling pace. Better each day. Create a lot, consume a little.

What will you create today?
