The ifs and whens of therapy

Therapy is great but many ifs and whens need to happen.

In 2016 I tried therapy for the first time. It didn't work. The therapist I was matched up with, honestly, asked too many questions right away. I was overwhelmed and so I raged quit. I felt I needed therapy. I was hurting myself and in an emotional dark place. Without getting into the specifics I had a rug pulled beneath my feet moment that hurt me pretty bad. I thankfully had a dog—she kept me going.

Years would go by with more ups and downs. Along the way I'd figure things out on my own—whether that be through YouTube, podcasts, or an activity that would alter how I was feeling.

But then, in 2021 I was presented with another rug pulled beneath my feet moment.

I tried therapy again. This time I was matched with my therapist who I'm so thankful for. She knew how to not overwhelm me as I was upfront with that, but she over delivered in her time with me. I talked alot. I reflected a lot. And I asked a lot of questions. From my answers to her questions I received homework with the greatest one being: identify your triggers. It's a tool that I've been able to simplify and still use to this day.

I say all of this because if I didn't have a traumatic event in 2021 and if I didn't get paired with my great therapist I don't know how well I'd actually be doing today. I'm sure I'd be okay, but if I was my parents I'd be worried.

The problem with therapy is that when we are seeking help or therapy we are typically weak, sensitive, and critical of ourselves and those that help us. We are also in immediate need and with the chances of having great professionals being available within the week or month that means having to wait or settle—two things that are deal breakers when not mentally feeling well.

So, what if there was a self-serve option for the in-between phases of therapy? I'm talking about the beginning until you find a therapist, the middle between therapy sessions, and the after once you feel like you're in maintenance mode.

Addressing the ifs, whenever, is needed.
