Joy in observation

Most advice tells you to do more. Participate more. Engage more. Network more. What if we're too caught up in being part of everything?

The other day, I watched a teenager pull a wheelie in traffic. Most people would call him reckless – and maybe he is – but I found myself wondering about what drives someone to dance with danger like that. There's something fascinating about observing without judgment, just trying to understand.

Everything's engineered to keep you hooked. Another video, another bite, another episode. The platforms, the apps, the notifications – they're all built to keep you engaged, keep you moving.

But what about systems that encourage you to get lost? To wander? They barely exist. Everything's optimized for efficiency, for getting from A to B as quickly as possible. I think there's something powerful in rejecting that sometimes. In deliberately choosing the slower, quieter path.

Sometimes it's good to hit the roads without maps, stop to pick flowers from the ground, and leave the phone behind to look up at the sun. It's counter-intuitive, but I'm starting to think one of the most valuable skills today isn't knowing how to engage more – it's knowing when to step back and just watch.
