An Old Go-To: Anxiety by Autre Ne Veut

When in a troubled state in 2014 through 2016, I always found company in the work of Autre Ne Veut, particularly in their 2013 R&B album "Anxiety". The off-kilter production and shrill singing voice of Arthur Asher makes for an alienating experience, which pairs well with the lyrical content: Manic love and death are the primary topics; Asher just about screams his desires and fears.

"You promised me heaven, didn't you?"

"Anxiety" is a confessional, which always works so well with R&B, which since the 80s and 90s has been a fusion of sex and loss. There is a physicality to Autre Ne Veut's electronic backing, but it's there in his lyrics as well. For this album, freedom exists when one's heart is on their sleeve.
