a significant hymnal anniversary

Dear lovers of music, mystery, and meaning,

📖 Did you know that the Church Hymnal Corporation shipped 750,000 copies of the brand-new The Hymnal 1982 to Episcopal churches across the country on November 18, 1985? I know this thanks to a new book by Marty Wheeler Burnett, Shapers of the Hymnal 1982: Our Faith in Words and Music

Dr. Burnett’s book will be published this coming November 18 — 40 years to the day of that first massive shipment that many Episcopalians still use weekly. The book interviews many who were involved in the creation of the hymnal. It is a wonderful exploration of the hymnal’s formation and poses good questions about the future of our denominational “common core” of hymnody.

🎙️ The Rev. Ian Lasch and I had a chance to sit down with Dr. Burnett for an interview about her book on Monday, so look for that in your All Things Rite and Musical podcast feed soon.

“To walk with Jesus is to walk with a slow, unhurried pace. Hurry is the death of prayer and only impedes and spoils our work. It never advances it.”

Walter Adams, quoted in Alan Fadling’s An Unhurried Life: Following Jesus’ Rhythms of Work and Rest

🌕 Don‘t forget to look up! Someone in our house celebrated a birthday the same night as the Beaver Moon.
