Don't fool yourself.

Today, I read FS Signal in the Noise newsletter. Probably one of the deepest readings so far. I spent more than one hour reading and digesting.

This is my biggest takeaway from all its content: "When you write things out in simple language, misunderstanding has no place to hide." - Shane Parish

Are you able to write it in simple, universal words?

No? You don't understand it.

Don't fool yourself.

Test yourself. Write one paragraph and show it to the person next to you. Did she understand it?

Don't be lazy. Abstract thinking is good to understand what the forest looks like, but not good when you need to make an important decision. When thinking abstractly, too many assumptions are in play which means you don't really understand what whatever it is you are dealing with.

Take the time to go as deep as needed. The riskier the decision, the deeper you need to go to truly understand what you are dealing with.

When starting my Edtech company in 2018, I was thinking too abstractly about the problem I wanted to solve: Access and Quality of education. No one argued with me that the quality of education needed to be dramatically improved. No one argued with me that access to a good education needed to be massified.

- But why was the quality of education bad?
- But how was education going to be massified (without losing quality)?

I didn't know how to answer. I couldn't write a simple paragraph to explain the answer to these questions.

Cheers,
Eduardo
