I wanted to share a reflection on today's Tiny Thought from today's FS Newsletter "Every Day".
You say that you "...needed a new approach. One that didn't involve willpower. I made a rule to go to the gym every single day. And that subtle change made all the difference."
I believe going to the gym every day involves willpower. I think the real insight is defining a rule. The more specific the rule is, the easier it is to follow. Rules are meant to follow without question.
In your example, the rule could also be go to the gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8am for 30min. The decision has been made in advance, so the individual needs less willpower to go to the gym on those particular days. There are no alternatives. You can't say "I will go tomorrow".
I believe going to the gym everyday is harder and requires more willpower than going to the gym every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Especially if the person doesn't like to go to the gym (or he/she has't developed the habit of going to the gym).
Therefore, I think it is easier to do something a few times a week than daily, as long as you set a clear and specific rule.
Food for thought... :)
Kindly,
Eduardo
