Mini Lessons

Today's morning reflection centered around James Clear's 3-2-1: Momentum, how to be the best, and the source of inspiration issue.

Reading this issue from start to finish might take you two or three minutes, but I pondered on its content for nearly 60 minutes. My takeaways here:

1. “Before you throw more time at the problem, throw more focused action at the problem. You don’t need more time, you need fewer distractions.”

This quote reminded me of the 80/20 rule. I've been working under this principle for the past 12 months and it is impressive how much one can get done if we figure out what are the 20% of the inputs that generate 80% of the outputs. It's magic. My productivity has increased significantly. And I don't mean that my output is greater or "more than". I mean that I am doing less but better--that is, generating the results I need by working less. This has allowed me to add other things I want to do in my life beyond work, such as spending more time with my three kids playing, spending more time reading and reflecting, or spending more time excersicing. This "principle" has allowed me to have more free time and use it how I please.

I strongly recommend you figure out what is your 20% that generates the 80% of your required output, so you have more free time.

2. “Momentum goes both ways. Don’t move, feel sluggish. Start moving, feel like moving a little more. Don’t talk, feel timid. Start chatting, conversation gets a little easier. Don’t ship, feel stuck. Start creating, ideas begin to flow.”

I just can't figure out why is it SO hard to just GET STARTED. Is it fear of failure? I will keep pondering on this question. If you have an insight you want to share, please reply. Thanks!

3. Mountaineer Alex Lowe on how to be the best: “The best climber in the world is the one who’s having the most fun.” Source: Outside Magazine

I loved this quote. This is what truly really matters. Forget other metrics and stop comparing yourself. Are you having fun doing what you do? Then you are the best. Period. Read it again please: Mountaineer Alex Lowe on how to be the best: “The best climber in the world is the one who’s having the most fun.”

Have a great day!
