Turning a year older and starting a blog

Hey World, I’m Eric. I just celebrated a birthday that puts me squarely in the late 40s age bracket and to be honest, it doesn’t feel like it. I’ve had friends I’ve known for years reach out in a variety of ways in today’s society to wish me a happy birthday and I’ve had complete strangers that I’m connected with through my job do the same. Most importantly though I received a letter from a friend thanking me for being her friend for a number of years. It wasn’t something I was expecting and it was very nice to receive.

I’m the first to admit that I have no problem being the asshole when I have to be. For example, I have absolutely zero issue telling someone that is being a problem at a sporting event to sit down and shut up. Nor do I have any problem telling people in today’s world to wear their damn mask regardless of what “rights” they think they have. For these reasons I often wonder if I’m really the nice guy that I think I am and that people have told me I am. This letter I received from a friend did exactly that and more. It was very thoughtful and heartwarming to realize that someone else thinks enough about me to take the time to not only say it but write it down and put it in the mail to me. Maybe letter writing is a lost art form. Maybe we’d say things in letters that we won’t say in a text, email, or phone call because of the delay. Either way, I think this is going to start a campaign for me to do something similar for friends of mine.

Cheers!
Eric
