Miscommunication

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” — George Bernard Shaw

Yes, this is and has been the biggest problem for a long time. And so one wonders: what is the main cause of miscommunication?

Short answer: lack of empathy.

People have trouble imagining other people’s point of view. We have trouble understanding how others feel.

And social media and polarizing politics is making things worse.

The act of writing is a step in the right direction. But writing is hard. Learning to see things from outside your own self-centered view is hard.

And when you write for a large audience that includes mostly strangers you’ll discover what author Steven Pressfield discovered when he started out.

It’s a tough lesson that all good writers have to face. As Pressfield bluntly explains: Nobody Wants To Read Your Sh*t.

His book has useful advice for anyone who wants to communicate better (i.e. don’t assume that by just speaking or writing that you are communicating).
