Known for his dramatic portraits of black men, his figures occupy classical historical positions of power and influence.
He based this on this portraitKing Charles I with his wife Henrietta Maria. It was painted in the 17th century and is based on a painting by the famous portrait artist Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641).

On our last day in Michigan, we stopped at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) where we were greeted by The Thinker by Rodin.

Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket by James Abbott McNeill Whistler
Most famously known as the painting behind the lawsuit brought by Whistler against the art critic John Ruskin who accused Whistler of "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face". The Ruskin vs. Whistler trial, which took place on November 25 and 26, 1878, was disastrous for Whistler, who won only a farthing. After all the court costs, he had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. Whistler was forced to pawn, sell, and mortgage everything he could get his hands on.[

Funny story about this - we looked all over the DIA to find Blue Madonna by Bob Thompson however it was not on display.
The Detroit airport works with the DIA to show reproductions and we found it there!
A quick trip to PA / NJ / MN and back to Omaha and the Boulder were next. ✈️🚙
