Focus Post: New Mexico Museum of Art

This is a focus post about our visit to the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe on a rainy day in late September. If that doesn't sound interesting, I would skip it. 👋

The first thing to note is that this museum had two locations, which was a bit confusing. The modern art was at the Vladem Contemporary where they had a show called Reclaiming the Future, The Legacy of Japanese American Incarceration. Many pieces were heartbreaking but acknowledging our history through art is one way to learn from it.

This post is longer than most since I wanted to share so many amazing works. I also included the narrative on each piece (I would have made them smaller but couldn't control image size here). It was an astounding collection across both locations.

The second location was the Plaza Building which was just off, well, The Plaza and according Wikipedia:

The building was designed by architect Isaac Rapp and completed in 1917. It is an example of Pueblo Revival Style architecture, and one of Santa Fe's best-known representations of the synthesis of Native American and Spanish Colonial design styles. The façade was based on the mission churches of Acoma, San Felipe, Cochiti, Laguna, Santa Ana and Pecos.

It was a great place to spend an afternoon appreciating so much art and history.

Hope you get to enjoy it the next time you are in Santa Fe! 👋
