This is a focus post about a few hours at the Orakei Korako Geothermal Park outside of Taupo. If that doesn't sound interesting, I would skip it. 👋
We spent a night in a cabin on a farm on our last night in between Kinloch and Taupo (Feb 8th). The neighbors were pretty quiet. 🐮
We drove over to the geothermal park for a self-guided tour. Geyser puns. 🤦♀️
This is New Zealand's largest geyser field so there was lots to see. 👀
The Ruatapu Cave had a spiritual feel. The cave extended more than 35m / 115f down to a hot pool called 'Waiwhakaata' (Pool of Mirrors). It was one of only two known caves in the world located in a geothermal field. The beautifully clear pool contained warm, acidic water. 😳
This was called the Artist's Palette due to the variety of colors throughout the year. 🎨
This was called the Soda Fountain and showed up in 1984. 🥤
Apparently, you can take a helicopter from nearby Rotorua. 🚁
