30 Day Challenge - Day 9

Social media - part 2

Yesterday I mentioned some of the benefits of social media.  There are lots!  But I feel we’ve passed a tipping point where the costs are far higher than the benefits.

My biggest fear is that as a society we now seem to accept a lot of negative behaviour that we either wouldn’t have in the past or we wouldn’t have been exposed to in such a large and continual way. I feel this behaviour has crept its way into our society whereby it’s become the norm and it’s having significant detrimental impacts on our wellbeing - psychologically, socially and physically.

What behaviour am I talking about?  Mostly the disrespectful, hateful, divisive and intolerant ways people speak to both “friends”, acquaintance's and strangers on social media platforms. It’s not just that people are so willing to communicate so disrespectfully in a very dehumanising way, lacking in any empathy or concern for the other person - it’s also that many of us are continuously exposed to this negativity and disrespect when we read and are often triggered by these comments.

What does this mean for our future and the society we and our children will be living in?

More tomorrow.
