30 Days to Better Habits - James Clear

Yesterday I signed up to James Clear's 30 Days to Better Habits free email course.

I have a history of following James and his work.  I've read his blog regularly after I discovered it about 4+ years ago, I listened to Atomic Habits via audiobook when it was first released, followed up by purchasing the Kindle version soon after and signing up to his newsletter.

I've recommended his blog and book to clients and friends many times over the years as James has a very elegant and digestible way of sharing content on all things related to habits, health and productivity.  It's been interesting to observe James's work gather momentum over this time where I can now mention his name and more people know who I'm talking about.  So I was pleased to receive an email launching his free 30 day course on habits.  It was the nudge I needed.

As much as I have really resonated with his work on habits, I haven't really implemented any of it in a significant way - this is very typical of me - I love to to learn, I'm good at sharing what I've learnt with others, but I'm not as good at putting it into practice.  According to James this could be because I haven't adopted enough of an "identity-based habit" - this is his first lesson in this course.

James suggests the first step is to write your desired identity by finishing this sentence:

I'm the type of person who... is dedicated to supporting and encouraging wellbeing practices (my entry)

Next he says I need to add a habit that reinforces this identity by finishing this sentence:

The habit I'll be focusing on is... regularly and frequently sharing wellbeing content and resources (my entry)

So, here I am writing this blog post as part of the new identity I'm creating for myself.  I don't think I could've picked a better starting point.

I want to build and strengthen my offerings in wellbeing to current and future clients.  I have a lot of knowledge and resources that I can share that could support people to be better versions of themselves and live better lives - I think this is so desperately needed in our current age of social media and information overwhelm.

I want to be the type of person that makes a difference in the lives of others as well as my own. I also need to action the content I share just as much as the people I want to support - as James said in a recent interview with Brene Brown "Everything that I write about is mostly a reminder to myself of what I should be doing."

I encourage you to join me
