Pulling together thoughts for my proposed session at ProductCamp STL and upcoming course at The School of the Possible. Here are my four rules about rules, as they apply to an individual subject to the rules of others.
- Read the manual (or RTFM if you prefer)
- Consider the consequences, consider the possibilities
- Always follow the rules, except when you shouldn’t
- Rules are meant to be changed, so change them
There are complementary rules about the rules that apply to those who subject others to rules.
- Write and publish the rules
- Consider the consequences, consider the possibilities
- Always enforce the rules, except when you shouldn’t
- Rules are meant to be changed, so change them
I’m still working on number one for rule makers. I think that label will work, I just need to flesh out the description a bit.
The session at ProductCamp will be a broad overview touching on the main concepts, with a particular focus on rule 3 (it’s only 45 minutes). The SotP course will span six weeks, with four rules bookended by an opening and closing session.
