The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has released new figures revealing that, as of August 2024, there are 181 registered sex offenders within the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council area, including both those living in the community and those incarcerated.

Specifically, Coleraine has 45 registered offenders, Limavady has 38, and Ballymoney has 29.

However, releasing such specific numbers in smaller communities raises concerns about the potential identification of these individuals, which could lead to reprisals or even cases of mistaken identity. This could put innocent individuals at risk and endanger their personal safety.

Across Northern Ireland, Belfast Borough Council Area records the highest number of registered offenders at 646, while Mid Ulster Borough Council Area has 120. The PSNI, alongside other agencies, manages these offenders under the Public Protection Arrangements for Northern Ireland (PPANI). Offenders are categorised by risk, with medium and high-risk individuals managed through a multi-agency approach, while low-risk offenders are typically handled by a single agency.

The PSNI’s role in this management includes collaboration with PPANI, enforcing court orders, and conducting risk assessments. This coordinated effort aims to ensure public safety while addressing the complexities of offender management and safeguarding individuals within the community.
