Getting back into a blog

I enjoyed reading blogs long ago. I found 37signals through Lifehacker on my Google Reader back when a gmail account was invite only and less nefarious. I don’t care for current social media offerings, you are better off avoiding those places. I've minimized my intake to Instagram and Linkedin and it’s had a profundly positive impact on my mental health and life.

But I do miss blogs, and I miss sharing with others who cared about what I have going on. Either the nostalgia lenses are blurring my better judgement or my vanity is shining through this social media withdrawl. I’ve kept a personal journal for years and the act of clarifying your thoughts is powerful. There’s something in that act I want to share and the simplicity of this blog takes away the friction of creating the habit. In my 20s I wrote on a blog when I had nothing worth sharing, whereas now I’ve convinced myself that several children, job changes, cities, and years later I have something worth reading.

If you’ve found this, I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned being in management for 10 years as it’s the craft I have focused great effort into. I've coached others in the role succesfully helping them shape their careers into leadership and management, and feel that books on the subject still miss practicalities (expect maybe this one, it's great). I read a lot of management type books and would rather post a short review here than in Good Reads so I'll talk about that periodically. I’m in 3 differnent management book clubs at the moment so sharing here will be unavoidable.

I learned basic game development in the Godot engine last summer and started designing a game with my brother. We are amateurs without success but sharing our process and what we’ve learned helps support the building of the habit. I started a blog in google docs that I never shared, blaming my lack of blogging tool, on how to get into Indie Game Development.

I started playing guitar again 6 months ago as many have during the pandemic. I played in college off and on with the goal of impressing girls (which worked). I’m not sure what my goal is now, simply to demonstrate to my children that learning and trying new things is important. I’ve tried different instruments and methods this time around so perhaps it can inspire you to try something new. I may have attempted recording a song, I am not drunk enough to share that.

Before the pandemic I started a TV Club with my dad and brother with the intent of getting through my backlog of Television shows systematically. We've watched 11 different series and meet weekly to discuss a handful of episodes. In my head my criticism of television is better, I can break down what I like and don't more clearly. So you can expect reviews of shows and other things (Books, music, other useful purchases).

Self Help, Continuous Improvement, Lean, Agile, you can choose a buzz word but all have been a part of my mindset for long enough that I feel comfortable sharing what I’ve learned. I’m often employed to focus on these pursuits exclusively so there will be insights.

Or maybe I’ll just write here for me, never telling anyone what’s here. I don’t think it has a comment system so there’s that. My friends can still find me on Twitter and Instagram.
